I am interested in making a keggle. If you didn't know this is a 1/2 barrel keg converted into a brew pot. I have two questions:

1. Anybody know of a honest source for empty 1/2 barrel kegs?

2. Anybody know somebody that has a plasma cutter or some other means to make a clean circular cut on the top of the keg?

Thanks!

First off welcome to the Abnormal Forum!

If you can source a keg, heritage welding will plasma cut the top off for $10 from what I've been told. I cut the tops of mine off with an angle grinder. Not perfect, but neither am I.

Cool thanks!

If only I could find a keg now, I would be all set.

If only I still lived in a frat house . . .

We used to have at least 5-6 empties laying around at all times. If only I had been smarter back then and kept one.

Well a good friend of mine does demolition and finds a couple a year when tearing down rental units and such. I'll make them available to those that need them when he give them to me. But no timeline or anything on this, it's totally hit or miss.

Just ask around to friends though, my fiance's dad has known I've brewed for a long time, and just last thursday mentioned to me he's got a keg that's sat in his second garage for about 5 years! When I get it, along with any kegs I get, I'll look at what I currently have, and if the new one is better I'll upgrade my existing unit and make old one available to a club member.

I will have one that is currently my boil kettle available soon. It's well used, and sorta beat up, but it's just used to boil wort, and already has a weldless fitting and the top cut out!
